Been there. Done that.

A Third-Culture Kid (TCK) is "an individual who, having spent a significant part of the developmental years in a culture other than the parents' culture, develops a sense of relationship to all of the cultures while not having full ownership in any. Elements from each culture are incorporated into the life experience, but the sense of belonging is in relationship to others of similar experience." --David Pollock

You know you're a TCK when:

1) You can't answer the question "where are you from?"
2) You speak two (or more) languages but can't spell in them
3) "Where are you from?" has more than one reasonable answer
4) You feel odd being in the ethnic majority
5) You have the urge to move to a new place every couple of years
6) You go into culture shock upon returning to your "home" country
7) You flew before you could walk
8) You have a passport, but no driver's license
9) You speak with authority on the quality of airline travel.
10) You don't know where home is
11) You sort your friends by continent
12) Your second major is in a foreign language you already speak
13) You feel that multiple passports would be appropriate.
14) Your high school memories include those days that school was cancelled due to tear gas, riots, demonstrations, or bomb threats.
15) Half of your phone calls are unintelligible to those around you.
16) You know the geography of the rest of the world, but you don't know the geography of your own country.
17) You realize it really is a small world, after all.
18) You're spoilt. You know it. You're VERY spoilt.

What happens in Vegas, Stays In Vegas

That's all folks.

Lol, just kidding. Been here for three weeks. All I can say is its sooo freakin hot outside. Had a few dehydration spells. Lips are chapped. I DO drink water. Or I did. I know. It's kinda like in Saudi. You stay indoor as much as possible. All the time if you can.

School has been VERY interesting. You'd be amazed at how much your brain can retain. When you think you've had as much as possible to remember, or your brain is all saturated...you continue to study and retain information. Don't underestimate the powers of your brain. yeah.

Eating healthy. Check

Working out. Check

Prayers. Semi-check

Doing my readings. err...Check

Going to classes. CHECK

Paying attention in classes. Pending

The Strip? Not so much. I know, "fighting the temptation" as some would say. Went there with Rehan when he came to drop me off and then when Janice flew through Vegas. That was fun. We went to Paris and then Belagio. Apparently Clooney was at Belagio that weekend. We didnt see him. Yes, we did try looking for him. Janice and I checked out all the wedding chapels. You know, to see what the Vegas weddings looked like. I think I'm getting married here. It is SO beautiful here...everything! It's kinda like in Saudi. Everything is gourgeous...all glammed up, at the verge of being gaudy. Yeah.

It's all good. Outside of school, I've got no time for anything else anyways. 8am class. noon lunch. 5-6pm school over. work out. home for dinner/shower. study. study. study. sleep. back to classes at 8am. everyday. kinda. Bhoomi and I are going to check out one hotel on the strip per weekend till the Blocks. Tryna get acclimated to our new city.

Haven't had anything particularly crazy yet. Yet.

la copa de la vida

Cup Of Life

The cup of life
This is the one
Now It's the time
Don't ever stop

Push it along
Gotta be strong
Push it along
Right to the top

The feeling in your soul
Is gonna take control
Nothing can hold you back if u really want it
I see it in your eyes, you want the cup of life
Now that the day is here, we gotta go and get it

Do you really want it? (yeah!)
Do you really want it? (yeah!)

Here we go! Ale, Ale, Ale
Go, go, go! Ale, Ale, Ale
Tonight's the night
We're gonna celebrate
The cup of life, Ale, Ale, Ale

The cup of life
It's do or die
It's here it's now
Turn up the lights

Push it along
Then let it roll
Push it along
Go Go Goal!

And when you feel the heat
The world is at your feet
No one can hold you down if you really want it
Just steal your destiny, right from the hands of fate
Reach for cup of life 'cause your name is on it

Do you really want it? (yeah!)
Do you really want it? (yeah!)

Here we go, Ale, Ale, Ale
Go, go, go, Ale, Ale, Ale
Tonight's the night we're gonna celebrate
The cup of life, Ale, Ale, Ale

The feeling in your soul is gonna take control
Nothing can hold you back if you really want it
I see it in your eyes
You want the cup of life
Now that the day is here, gotta go and get it

Do you really want it? (yeah!)
Do you really want it? (yeah!)
Do you really want it? (yeah!)
(Yeah! Yeah!)

Here we go, Ale, Ale, Ale
Go, Go, Go, Ale, Ale, Ale
Tonight's the night we're gonna celebrate
The cup of life, Ale, Ale, Ale

Un, dos, tres! Ole, Ole, Ole
Un, deux, trois! Ale, Ale, Ale
Tonight's the night we're gonna celebrate
The cup of life, Ale, Ale, Ale

the Garden state

all pun intended. where the hell are the gardens? NJ is yuck. My new project is in Trenton, NJ. That's right, no Saudi. yet. We arent allowed to go outside alone past 6pm in Trenton. apparently there was a shooting and 6 people were found dead. the water in trenton is pretty bad...dried up my skin! and it is cold at night....brrr! ok enough bashing.

The bright side. I'm back in the north east. even if its for the week. whatever. the weather is great. we're located 40 minutes from Philly and an hour from The city. I havent been to nyc yet. Janice and I went to Philly...where I met up with Randy. It was great to see that girl again...after what? SIX YEARS! wow. good stuff. a lot, A LOT to catch up on! Back to Philly after...well, 3 years, bc i went back during Sam's graduation. Even though its tiny, the city is soo lively. I wish Dallas was half as much alive. And I'm not talking about greenville and deep ellum and clubbing. I'm talking city life. Maybe uptown will bring that to dallas, not quite there yet.

The other days of the week we went to Princeton. Oh Gosh...I wish I knew how beautiful their campus was when I went to Sem...I would've soooo applied! I think I had a good chance...had a pretty good SAT score. Was cum laude and had a couple AP credits. Was involved in activities, com. service, bball, tennis. i was a nerd in high school. i still wouldve been in college if i could. it's great being a nerd. The only schools I applied to were SMU and TCU. My criteria was I needed to be in Dallas. Stupid guidance counselor. Thinking back I think I wouldve done Wash U or Columbia as my first choices. Anyways, back to princeton. it's like university park with 490258904258913 more people and more places to chill at like coffee shops (no, not starbucks). And they have a lindt chocolate store!!!

So in Trenton, you cross over the bridge and you are in PA. And check this out...gas stations in NJ are not selfservice. kinda like saudi...they pump gas for you. was kinda wierd at first...wasnt sure what i was supposed to do. and wtf...gas was cheaper there! $2.68 vs here $2.95... eh?

My team is great. I should talk about work. After all I am in jersey for work. 3 hour flight. slept both ways. New Jersey Labor dept. Unemployment insurance. something about me and govt projects...i swear. My boss's boss is a great guy! He took our team out for sushi at princeton. It was sooo good! So he spent six months in japan or something. fun guy to talk to. its such a different atmosphere here. people are so different. yeah i know people bitch about the north east and people's attitude. whatever. they are so much more open minded and open to new things. very diverse. cultured. respect differences, etc. i love it. i feel sooo at home here! haha southern hospitality my ass.

i guess the grass is always greener on the other side. Next weekend: Kingston, PA! =)
